Irish rider Conn McDunphy celebrates victory in the United States where he spent over two hours off the front

Former Irish elite TT champion Conn McDunphy has gotten his American pro racing stint off with a bang after taking victory in the San Luis Road Race in San Diego, California, which also doubled as the California State Championships.

McDunphy, who is back racing with his home club Lucan CRC this season, is in the US to ride a number of pro races including Tour of Redlands and Tour de Gila, guesting with Californian team SoCal Cycling.

On a hilly 24km course in North San Diego County in the San Luis Road Race, McDunphy attacked with two others from the gun. While they combined well initially, the Irish rider dropped his breakaway companions after about an hour out front. He rode the remainder of the race, about 2½ hours, solo to win by around four minutes.

Fellow Irish rider Cormac Mcgeough (Canel's-ZeroUno), who helped to arrange McDunphy's trip to the US, was 2nd, with Gavin Hlady (Team Mike's Bikes p/b Equator) 3rd in the pro-elite men's race.
