McConvey & Aiken sprint for win in epic UK CiCLE Classic; Duncan gets stuck in

Irish riders Roger Aiken and Connor McConvey both put in very strong rides at the 180km Rutland-Melton International CiCLE Classic in Leicestershire yesterday.

The race includes plenty of climbing and also a series of off road sections after the 100km marker, earning it a reputation as Britain's answer to Paris-Roubaix.

Aiken, who works full time and rides for Team ASEA, and Belgian-based McConvey of the Continental ranked Team 3M were among a group of just 27 riders that remained at the finish sprinting for victory.

They all clocked the same time as winner Steele Von Hoff, the Australian national criterium champion and former Garmin-Sharp rider who is now competing on the UK scene for Continental team NFTO Pro Cycling.

He took the verdict on the sprint to the line just ahead of Chris Opie (One Pro Cycling) and Harry Tanfield of JLT Condor.

Von Hoff did not realise a late breakaway of four riders had been caught and thought he was sprinting for 5th, only realising he had won when he got off his bike.

Runner-up Tanfield rode Kerry Group Rás Mumhan in Kerry over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend. He was 2nd on stage 1 and on stage 2, beaten in bunch sprints to the line on both occasions by Paidi O'Brien (Osbourne Meats- McCarthy Cycles) who won three of the races four stages.

After Aiken and McConvey making the front group yesterday, Ryan Mullen (An Post-Chainreaction) was next best of the Irish. He came home in 45th place, some 44 seconds down on the winner.

Dunne was next, coming home in 50th at 2:54 followed by Ali Macaulay (Team ASEA) at 10:56 and David Montgomery (Team 3M), who was in a group 13:40 down.
