Kevin McCambridge (Trinity Racing) drew a line under a season-threatening crash in Belgium earlier this year when he was first home in today’s Haldane Fisher North Down Grand Prix on the Donaghadee-Bangor circuit.
The 20-year-old crashed hard on the stage 3 TT of Le Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux in early April, suffering concussion and two broken wrists.
However, his win at the North Down GP confirms he is readying for a return to international competition, especially as he managed to get clear of a very strong breakaway in the closing stages.
McCambridge was active early in the race – eight laps of a 12.5km circuit – and pressed hard on the climb on the second lap, with his effort forcing a decisive split. A group of 11 riders got clear and later proved the springboard for McCambridge to attack again.
The breakaway group worked well as the laps ticked down before McCambridge pounced on the penultimate lap; attacking on the climb once more and this time breaking clear alone.
Once he got away solo he put his head down and rode hard towards the finish, pulling out a gap of about 45 seconds on the chasers to take what was a strong victory in the end.
Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) came through for 2nd place with David Montgomery (Spellman Dublin Port) 3rd. Paul Antoine Hagan (Banbridge CC) took 4th place with Conor McCann (Inspired Cycling) in 5th and Gareth O`Neill (Caldwell Cycles) rounding out the top six in the main event.
