May and Killeen best from small fields at Cyclocross National Series

Caoimhe May (Orwell Wheelers) and Tadgh Killeen (Kilcullen Cycling Club Murphy Geospacial) have won the main events at the Cyclocross National Series in Co Galway.

Western Lakes CC put on a great second round of the series, and though the fields were small on the day - 11 in the men's main event and 12 in the women's race - there was fierce racing at the front through the categories.

Junior rider Hugh Og Mulhearne (Verge Sport PI Cycles) also impressed today; winning the junior men's race and going close to Killeen's lap time on the day.

May led the way in the women's event from start to finishing, nudging ahead early and then gradually extending her advantage on each of the five laps. She saw off the challenge of 16-year-old Aoife O'Donovan by 42 seconds.

O'Donovan, of Dungarvan CC, who won the B men's race in Clonmel last weekend. Elena Wallace of Harps CC was 3rd today, some 1:09 down on winner May.

In the men's race, Killeen, who has started the season with an impressive winning run, was best from Richie Barry (St Finbarr's CC) over seven laps. Killeen put 32 seconds into Barry on the opening lap in Petersburg, Clonbur, and then continued to push.

By the finish he was well clear on his own at the head of affairs, beating Barry by 2:23, with Timothy O'Regan (All human-VeloRevolution Racing Team) 3rd at 2:53.

Hugh Og Mulhearne (Verge Sport PI Cycles) won the junior race from Ciaran O'Sullivan (Greenmount CA) and John O'Mahony (Newcastle West Cycling Club). The Masters 40 race was won by Ronan O'Flynn (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) from Trevor Costello (Islandeady Cycling Club) and Kevin Keane (St Tiernans Cycling Club).

Barry Convery (Newry Wheelers CC) was best in the Masters 50 event, from Jay McCauley (Strabane Lifford Cycling Club) and Padraic Quinn (Gaeltacht.cc). The Masters 60 race went the way of Johnny McCabe (Cuchulainn CC) from Michael Hopkins (Ballina Cycling Club) and Glenn Watson (Galway Bay CC).
