Max Fitzgerald (JEGG-SKIL-DJR) may have been focussed on the track in recent weeks as he prepared for the European Track Championships in Portugal but he was on the mark last night on his return to the road.

The second-year junior took a silver medal in the junior scratch race at those Europeans the week before last and also broke the Irish junior kilo record in Anadia. Last night at Mondello Park his power in the sprint secured victory.

Fitzgerald was best, by a distance, in the bunch sprint that settled the honours in the fifth round of the Mondello Series, promoted by Dublin Ravens, in Co Kilddare.

Fitzgerald got the verdict ahead of U23 rider Chis Marshall (Velo Performance), with Mark Dowling (All humanVeloRevolution) rounding out he podium on the night.

Javan Nulty (Unattached) was 4th, with evergreen Eugene Murtagh (Lucan CRC) in 5th and Eoin Kelly (UCD Cycling Club).
