Matthew Teggart just pips Cathal Clarke on the line in the uphill sprint that settled the Groucho GP in Richill today.
Matthew Teggart of the Nicolas Roche Performance Team took victory in the Groucho’s Grand Prix in Richhill, Armagh, today; sprinting past Cathal Clarke of Newry Wheelers in the final metres of the uphill finish.
Clarke looked to have the race wrapped up after getting a gap on the leading group. But he perhaps underestimated the drag to the line and died a little in the last 10 metres.
Teggart finished much faster and had just about enough road to overhaul Clarke right on the line for the win; his second in recent weeks after more than 12 months plagued with injury and 10 months away from racing.
Just two weeks ago Teggart took victory in the Sean Nolan GP A3 race in Co Meath in what was just his second race back. Today’s victory makes it two wins from four starts so far this year.
Teggart began his racing with Banbridge CC and along with club mate Mark Downey he impressed in the youth ranks, gaining selection for Ireland and being named on the FBD 2020 Talent Team.
However, a trapped nerve has sidelined him for much of the time since he turned junior last year, though on the strength of his kick and timing in today's uphill finish he appears to have regained his sharpness.
Rory Maguire of Phoenix was third across the line in the big bunch sprint, just seconds after the leading pair.
He came in just ahead of recently crowned Ulster Junior champion Ryan Reilly of Foyle, Lindsay Watson (Plush) and Bann Wheelers’ Bobby Kane.
