Matt Teggart was on fire in France today, just narrowly failing to get past David van der Poel.
Ireland's Matt Teggart in head-to-head with Van der Poel
Irish Team Wiggins rider Matt Teggart has taken his season best result with 2nd on the opening road stage of Tour Alsace.
The French UCI 2.2-ranked race saw David van der Poel (Corendon Circus) claim victory just ahead of the Irishman.
Van der Poel is the son of former top pro Adrie van der Poel; a nemesis of Sean Kelly's.
His younger brother Mathieu van der Poel has just won the Dutch pro road race title and is former world cyclocross champion.
The 26-year-old Dutch rider got the better of Teggart (22) after 147.5km from Champ de Feu to Sélestat.
Maximilian Stedman (Great Britain) rounded out the podium after a sprint from a breakaway.
At the time of writing there was no news of Michael O'Loughlin, a Team Wiggins team mate of Teggart's.
The five-stage Tour Alsace got underway last night with an unusual team prologue TT. Each of the teams was split into three-men selections.
The test was won by a United States trio from Great Britain followed by Seg Racing Academy and Van der Poel’s Corendon-Circus.
The TTT result coupled with today's stage 1 result means Van der Poel is in the yellow jersey with three stages to come.
More to follow later.
Michael O'Loughlin leads one of the Team Wiggins trios in the team prologue on Wednesday evening.
