Matt Teggart makes podium at Tour of Britain

Ireland's Matt Teggart has taken the intermediate sprints classification jersey at the Tour of Britain.

The Team Wiggins rider made the main breakaway which gained more than six minutes at one point on stage 2 today.

And though Teggart would eventually go back to the bunch while two of the breakaway men survived for 1st and 2nd on the stage, he had done his job.

He set about taking the sprints jersey and did so very decisively; collecting maximum points at all three sprint primes.

Because of that, his points tally was enough to take the jersey. And he got his trip to the podium after the stage for the jersey presentation.

Teggart's success followed 24 hours after compatriot and team mate Mark Downey was in the opening stage escape for about  150km.

Both riders are part of a Team Wiggins selection only drafted into this race days before the event.

Irish team Aqua Blue Sport were to ride but the team has folded and so Teggart's and Downey's squad got the call-up.

And the two Irish riders, who rode the recent Tour de l'Avenir on the Irish team, have ridden very well despite the last minute nature of their presence in the race.

Today Teggart forged clear in a five-man group on the 174km stage from Cranbrook to Barnstaple.

The breakaway and the peloton split to pieces on a very lumpy stage. Cameron Meyer (Mitchelton-Scott) and Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani-CSF) were the only two breakaway men to make it all the way.

Meyer was too strong in the last push to the line, sprinting in to win just ahead of Tonelli.

The Italian was just caught on the line by a chasing group but did enough to finish runner-up.

Kiwi Patrick Bevin (BMC Racing) beat Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep) in the sprint from the small chase group for 3rd, just two seconds behind Meyer.

The stage result, and time bonuses picked up by the escapees, left Meyer and Tonelli on the same time at the top of the general standings.

However, the Italian takes the leader’s green jersey on count back. Downey would finish in 79th place some 6:26 back.

And Teggart was in 85th, some 11:54 down in a large group after his breakaway heroics.
