As expected after the penultimate stage to Mount Diablo, Philip Deignan (United Healthcare) ended up in 9thposition overall in the Tour of the California. The final stage on Sunday didn’t offer much opportunity for the GC to change, and the race ended in a bunch sprint.

The stage of 131 kilometres from San Francisco to Santa Rosa was won by Peter Sagan (Cannondale) from Daniel Schorn (NetApp-Endura) and Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Sharp) with Matt Brammeier (Champion System) finishing in 10th place in the sprint.

That was a good result for the national champion, who was aggressive on a number of stages and seems to be coming around very well.

Deignan was also well to the fore in 17th place at the end, which was just as well as there were a number of splits in the bunch which could have put his top-10 place in jeopardy. His team also finished the race in 3rdplace in the team classification ahead of many World Tour teams.

Next up for Deignan is the UCI 2.2 Tour de Beauce in Canada, which starts on the 11th of June. There have been a couple of Irish victories at the race previously, as David O’Loughlin won a stage back in 2005, with Ciarán Power taking a stage win the previous year. The United Healthcare team won the race overall last year with Rory Sutherland, and Deignan’s team mate, Ben Day took victory in 2010, so the team can be expected to do well again this year.
