Best known for his off-road exploits, Matthew Adair demonstrated his versatility yesterday when he jumped clear of the winning escape at the Clann Eireann Cup in Derrymacash, Co Armagh.

The Banbridge CC man was part of an eight-man move that survived out front to the finish at the end of the 45 mile contest.

The winning escape established itself in the second half of the eight-lap race and pulled out a gap on the small main field that ensured it was not recaptured.

And on the final five-mile circuit Adair had a dig that carried him free of his breakaway companions, with hard riding on his part to the finish enough to give him victory.

Just 14 seconds would elapse after the delighted Adair crossed the line, with Harvey Barnes of East Tyrone CC taking the sprint from the remainder of the breakaway for 2nd place.

Another young gun, Conor McCann of ASEA-Wheelworx rounded out the podium just behind the fast finishing Barnes, with the others in the breakaway tightly packed just behind.

Liam Wilson of hosts Clann Eireann CC took 4th just ahead of former international rider and Rás winner Tommy Evans.

He is currently coaching Ireland's best triathletes as the Rio Olympics approaches but has clearly remained in great shape.
