Mathieu van der Poel has put in another incredible finish to win today’s stage 4 at the Tour of Britain and also take the race lead.
The Dutchman has been one of the most exciting riders in pro cycling in recent years, with dramatic winning finishes increasing his popularity.
And today’s stage into Kendal was another spectacular win
for him; the Corendon Circus rider pulling the trigger on the final climb to
the finish and leaving the field in his wake.
Three riders were still dangling off the front of the reduced peloton when Van der Poel began his sprint on the hard Beast Banks uphill finish.
He immediately overhauled the trio ahead and put significant daylight between himself and everyone else.
Indeed, though he sat up to celebrate another brilliant win, he still had three seconds of an advantage on the line.
Jasper de Buyst (Lotto Soudal) was 2nd and Simon Clarke (EF Education First) finished 3rd, though van der Poel was in a league of his own.
He now leads the race by one second from Matteo Trenton, who had held the leader's jersey for Mitchelton-Scott since he won stage 2.
Eddie Dunbar (Team Ineos) had been on the attack earlier on the stage though his efforts were not successful and he lost 14 minutes.
Rory Townsend, the Irish Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes rider, took more points at the intermediate sprints and he retains the sprints jersey.
More to come.
