Going for gold: Martyn Irvine has Worlds silver in the bag and a real chance to make that gold!
Martyn Irvine’s career has today taken a massive step forward with the London Olympian blasting into the gold medal ride off in the individual pursuit at the UCI Track World Championships in Minsk, Belarus.
In qualifying this morning, Irvine was second quickest over the 4km test, in a time of 4:20.260. He will later today face the man who was quickest this morning, the 21-year-old Australian Michael Hepburn who posted a time of 4:18.456.
Irvine’s time was a new personal best and national record and given his form in recent months, few would bet against him lifting a world title for Ireland later today.
With silver already guaranteed and gold a real possibility, the ride today comes after a great few months for Irvine, who won two silver medals at the UCI World Cup meeting in December in Glasgow and also secured a pro contract on the road with US-based team Unitedhealthcare for this year.
Speaking after the qualification ride today, Cycling Ireland head coach Brian Nugent said: “We are ecstatic with Martyn’s ride, it was something else watching Martyn do that phenomenal ride. We’re looking forward to the final later this evening”.
Track coach Andy Sparks said: “We couldn’t have started off day 2 any better, with Martyn setting a new national record in qualifying for the gold medal final. Irish riders are once again showing that they can compete and beat the World’s best”.
We’ll have more later; excellent news for the man who just keeps improving.
