Martin Mizgajski takes Wexford County Champs with strong solo effort on final lap

Martin Mizgajski has taken victory in the Wexford County Championships for the second year in succession, putting in a very strong burst in Bunclody today to get clear of the rest of the field on the final lap and soloing to the finish.

Run over the challenging circuit used for the Eddie Tobin Memorial race, the 60+ riders who signed on today faced three laps of that circuit, with the A1 & A2 riders giving a slight handicap to the rest of the field, though that was quickly swallowed up.

On the opening lap, scratch men like Martin Gill (Wexford Wheelers) and Mick Doyle (Barrow Wheelers) were to the fore, but no moves of any real consequence took shape as the pace stayed high.

On the second of three laps Mick Doyle was again to the fore and he broke clear with Anthony Doyle (U/A), with that pairing opening a 30-second gap on the field.

Behind them, Shane Kelly (Slaney CC) attacked the filed in pursuit of the leaders but after around half a lap he was caught, as were the two leaders, setting the race up for an attacking finale on the third and final lap.

Mizgajski attacked hard on that closing lap and while the strongest of those in the main field tried to go after him, he eventually managed to get clear and take a solo win by around 20 seconds from Conor Crowley (Slaney CC) and Martin Gill (Wexford Wheelers) taking 3rd.

Dave Whitty (Barrow Wheelers) finished in 4th place good enough for the vets’ title.

All of the money raised in the Wexford Wheelers-promoted race is going to the purchase of a defribulator for all Wexford clubs to have at their events.
