Mark Downey takes first podium of pro career for Team Wiggins

Mark Downey has taken another strong result just a few days into his Team Wiggins tenure. This time he’s notched a very impressive podium result in Europe.

Irish rider Mark Downey has taken a fantastic 3rd place on the opening stage of the Volta ao Alentejo stage race in Portugal.

At the end of the 173.5km opener from Vendas Novas to Serpa he was part of a 1-3 for Team Wiggins.

The stage was won by team mate Gabriel Cullaigh from Justin Jules (WB Aqua Project Veranclassic).

And after almost 4½ hours in the saddle Mark Downey rounded out the podium for Team Wiggins on the same time.

Downey, who is just off the back of a track season, is in flying form. In his Team Wiggins debut on Sunday he placed 4th in the Classica da Arrabida (1.2).

The race he is currently riding is one Eddie Dunbar rode very well in last year; placing 5th overall.
