Marcus Christie has tonight set the fastest ever 10-mile time-trial on the island of Ireland, breaking a record set by David McCann exactly 10 years ago to the day.

On August 17th 2006 McCann clocked 18.21 but Christie, on the Woodgreen course, beat that by five seconds tonight by stopping the clock in 18.16.

It’s not a national record, mind, because Cannondale-Drapac pro Ryan Mullen still has that record at 17.42 which he set in the UK.

Christie’s effort was watched by commissaire Andrew Mills and his blistering record-setting time is set to be ratified by Cycling Ireland.

“There wasn’t really much head or tailwind, it was hard,” said an elated Christie.

“I overcooked the first wee drag, which was unlike me but from then on I was deep in the hurt locker.

“My numbers are very good and I'm the leanest I've been since I went on a mad diet in Switzerland in the past. But for sure there’s more to come from me.”
