Marc Heaney has gone close to victory in
a Belgian kermesse; finishing 2nd in a sprint from the breakaway.
The Asfra rider left himself with a lot
to do in the 120km race in Oostrozebeke after he missed the escape.
While that group of about 20 riders went
on to dominate the race, Heaney chased it for most of the way and caught it
late.
The breakaway went about an hour into
contest and while Heaney went after it in a three-man group and chased hard for
a couple of laps, he was caught.
However, he went again almost
immediately with a group of six. They knuckled down and chased the leaders for
well over an hour.
And while the gap only narrowly closed
each lap, the catch was eventually made with just over two laps remaining of
the 5.6km circuit.
Heaney’s team mate Timothy Sellar was in
the lead group and led him out in the headwind sprint.
However, while the Irish rider went very
close, American Eamon Lucas was too fast and took victory; Heaney finishing a
narrow runner-up.
However, while he went close to winning,
it was a very strong result for Heaney, especially considering he was forced
into a chase for so long.
