Grace Young and Richard Maes have taken a double for Strata 3-VeloRevolution at the Munster Cyclocross Championships.
Young was
continuing her route back to winning ways after a late season crash ruined the
end of her road season.
In the elite
women’s race she pressed on early in the Over the Hill CC promotion in
Ballindenisk, Co Cork.
On the opening
lap of four she got clear alone, leaving her team mate Agnieszka Wozniak with Lisa Stapelbroek of Kenmare Cycling Club.
Young had a gap
of 20 seconds on the two chasers after the opening lap, which soon doubled and
then further extended to just over one minute by the finish.
Behind her, while
Stapelbroek and Wozniak were evenly matched for a time, it was
eventually Stapelbroek who
pulled away from her rival.
She took the
silver medal in the colours of Kenmare, with Wozniak taking the bronze medal in
tough conditions.
In the men’s race Maes also struck out decisively early in the contest; riding away from his nearest rivals and never letting up.

After the opening
lap he had a gap of about 20 seconds over Michael Lucey (Killarney CC)
and Richard Barry (St Finbarr’s).
Trevor Woods and Patrick Clifford, both team mates of
lone leader Maes, were a little further back with Michael O’Loughlin (Le Col
Wiggins) for company.
As the race went on Maes extended his lead while Lucey
and Barry both suffered mechanicals.
O’Loughlin and Woods had continued to ride well in the
chase and they passed Lucey and Woods.
However, while O’Loughlin went on to take the silver
medal behind Maes, Barry fought back from his problems and took the bronze
medal.
Clifford took away the Masters 40 title while Woods
secured the Masters 50 crown for his efforts.
