Art MacManusa (South Dublin CC) has taken outright victory in the Newry Three-Day this afternoon, Sunday, after he and his team mates absorbed what the opposition could throw at them on the final 66-mile stage.
As expected, much of the challenge came from the promoting club Newry Wheelers. They were trying to get their emerging young rider Cormac Clarke into the yellow jersey by the end of today to take only the second Newry win in the event’s 25-year history.
However, MacManusa rode a very composed race. And the measure of his strength was summed up by his fourth place on today’s stage; having the legs to be up here at the end despite having to ride in defence of his yellow jersey on what was a punishing concluding stage.

North Down’s Matt Blayney put in a great ride today right from the opening stages. He went into today’s final leg wearing the green points jersey and set about defending that by taking the second intermediate sprint from his rival for that classification, Newry’s Drew McKinley.
As the race hurtled towards Castlewellan, it was the in-form Gareth McKee (Banbridge CC) who decided to have a good go for stage victory following his efforts up Spelga Dam yesterday
He was joined by Brian Steele of TVR, with both combining well to pull out a good gap on the bunch. They established a buffer of one minute, which came down to 40 seconds over the Bryansford first cat climb.
Some attentive riding in the bunch, as the GC men marked each other and MacManusa’s South Dublin CC team mates rode to control the gap, maintained the gap at 40 seconds for a period and it was looking like the two leaders would not be allowed ride away with the stage.
On the final climb of Rathfriland, 17-year-old Clarke – who was second on GC this morning – had a good go but he was covered by the yellow jersey of MacManusa. With the leaders then caught the race came down to a bunch sprint and while Clarke put in a great effort to take the stage it was the impressive Blayney who just had too much for everyone else, taking the victory and wrapping up the points jersey in convincing fashion.
Clarke was second over the line at the finish in Newry, with Gary Jeffers of East Tyrone Audi putting in a good burst for third and the yellow jersey bagging fourth in the bunch sprint.
The very aggressive McKee went home with the KOH jersey while MacManusa wrapped up a great overall win and his South Dublin CC took the team prize; topping a great weekend for them.
