Twice a world champion in the past, Colin Lynch is poised to face down a Canadian rival in his bid to collect a hat trick of coveted rainbow jerseys.

The track and TT specialist recorded the second fastest time in the qualifying round of the C2 individual pursuit at the World Paracycling Track Championships in Montichiari, Italy, early on Thursday.

And he is set to take on the fastest qualifier - Canada’s Tristen Chernove – this evening in a battle that will settle the destination of gold and silver.

That, of course, means that whatever happens in the final Lynch is guaranteed a silver medal.

But with golds at this level already in his palmares, he will be gunning for the top spot again in what would be a fantastic result for the Irish on St Patrick’s Day.

One of the other big names in the Irish camp, Eoghan Clifford, was riding the qualifiers in the individual pursuit C3 competition early today and was third fastest qualifier.

The means he progresses to a ride off against Japan’s Masaki Fujita to see who wins bronze and who fills 4th spot.

Like Lynch, Clifford has tasted major success at this level before; winning the scratch race at the track Worlds last year.

He also took gold in both the road race and the TT at the first time of asking at the World Road Championships in the US in 2014.

He retained that road TT world title in Switzerland last year when he also took bronze in the road race.

The pursuit finals in which both Irish riders take part begin from 5pm today, Thursday.
