Lydia Gurley has expressed her disappointment with finishing 16th in her points race at the World Track Championships.

Kirsten Wild took the gold medal for Holland in front of a home crowd in Apeldoorn. American Jennifer Valente took silver and Canada’s Jasmin Duehring claimed bronze.

Gurley was aggressive and made her way into several breakaway moves but left empty handed.

“It’s disappointing to race that hard and not get any points out of it,” she said.

“I was involved in a few moves with strong riders. But they just didn’t work out.”

However, she said she was happy generally with how she is progressing on the boards.

“My physical and mental level has moved up a level. I’m going to have a short break and come back stronger.

“If I keep racing the way I am racing, I feel that more results will come. I have been working really hard on my fitness. I train hard to make the racing easier.”

Last October in Berlin Gurley took a silver medal, with Lydia Boylan, in the madison at the Europeans.

And in February of last year she claimed bronze in the scratch at the UCI World Cup in Cali, Colombia.

As a result, Gurley is a rider Ireland hopes will be at the Tokyo Olympics. And she said she was now working towards that long-term goal.

“The next big focus is the European Championships; that is when it starts to get serious,” she said.

“When the Olympic qualification starts, I really believe we can get results then.”
