Lydia Boylan best of Irish in Bedford; DID Racing and Leinster post good team time trials

Two teams from Ireland are in action in the Shutt VR Bedford Three-Day in the UK this weekend. Lydia Boylan, the Irish track champion riding for Team CTC, was best of the Irish in the opening 55km road stage yesterday when she took 4th place in the charge to the line that settled the stage.

An inquiry has since rearranged the finishing order, with 2nd over the line Emily Kay (Scott Contessa) being awarded the stage win. The organisers had not released a full statement about the matter at the time of writing so it is unclear how Boylan's strong stage finish might be impacted.

Siobhan McNamara, who is riding for the new DID Electrical Racing Team, was the only other Irish woman in the lead group at the end of yesterday’s road stage and she took 19th place.

Fran Meehan of the Leinster team was just 10 seconds further back in 31st place while the DID Electrical Racing Team duo of Tonya Moran and Anne Dalton were in 32nd and 33rd place, just one second down on Meehan.

The other Irish riders in the Leinster and DID teams were further back the field, which split up in wet conditions that witnessed some aggressive riding from some of the best women in Great Britain who are in the field.

In this morning's Team Time Trial, Boylan's CTC team were 6th at 33 seconds, with the DID women in 8th, a further four seconds down, and Team Leinster in 13th, some 58 seconds back. The race continues with a road stage this afternoon followed by an individual time trial tomorrow morning, Monday, with a concluding road stage in the afternoon.
