Luke Smith claims Oldcastle GP victory

 

Luke Smith took victory in Sunday’s Oldcastle GP having won in Mountnugent less than 24 hours earlier.

The NRPT-Titan Containers man was part of a four-man escape in Oldcastle, Co Meath.

He broke clear in the 100km event with Christopher Birney (SportActive), Mark Reilly (Lucan CRC) and Conor Gallagher (Castlebar CC).

They combined well to build a commanding lead in the main event.

It featured A1, A2, A3 and junior riders after two of the three scheduled races were combined into one.

At the finished they had a gap of around 2½ minutes. Smith would claim the sprint for victory from Reilly, Gallagher and Birney in that order.

In the supporting A4 event at the Oldcastle GP Cahir O’Higgins (Scott-Orwell) took the bunch sprint finish that settled the honours.

He won from David Gleeson (Usher IRC) and Padraig Cooke (Shannonside CC).
