Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) has seen his general classification aspirations ended at Tour Down Under, with the Australian champion limping to the line when the flesh on his back shredded.
The Australian champion was involved in a roadside crash with about 10km to go on today's stage 3. He was under a pile of Astana Qazaqstan Team riders.
And when the fallers eventually struggle to their feet, the images of Plapp showed his national champion's jersey torn from his back, exposing extensive road rash.
The incident happened in the bunch, on a fast downhill section, with the riders appearing to crash towards the left had verge, landing on rocks and other debris.
As the incident occurred well outside the 3km to go marker, any time losses incurred by the riders now count in the general classification. Plapp got back on his bike and finished the stage in Campbelltown but was 9:53 down, taking him well out of the battle for the GC this week.
