Marianne Vos (Visma Lease a Bike) has won Amstel Gold Race with an incredible 'never say die' final sprint and lunge to the finish line after Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) celebrated too early.
Wiebes, whose team rallied around her after her chances increased when the race was shortened, was the highly fancied rider coming to the line in a reduced bunch.
Her team mates, Demi Vollering and world champion Lotte Kopecky, had marked the late attackers and worked to ensure the breakaway was caught in the final.
However, while Wiebes looked like she had it won, after squeezing her way expertly to the front along the barriers in the final sprint, she began her celebration much too early.
Vos had tracked her all the way in the sprint and was gaining on her as the line approached. And when Wiebes sat up for a two-armed victory salute, Vos mugged her on the line for a brilliant victory. Ingvild Gåskjenn (Liv AlUla Jayco) was 3rd.
“Ahia Lorena Wiebes!” ?
