Lucan CRC’s Daniel Kirwan today landed overall victory in the An Post Gorey Three Day, after overnight leader Liam Blanchfield (Bray Wheelers) missed the large 20-rider move that gained 1:41 on the bunch and reshaped the leader board.
The stage went to 16-year-old British rider Matt Flynn (Mountivation) who, as he did on stage 1, got clear in the winning breakaway and stole a march on them in the closing stages to win by himself.
Daire O’Sullivan (Usher IRC) was second just seven seconds back, with a further seven seconds elapsing before Matt Blayney (North Down) won the sprint for third from the other breakaway riders.
It has been a long road back to form for GC-winning Lucan rider Kirwan. A couple of years ago he was one of the most consistent riders in the country, but illness and injury followed and it has only been this year that he is back to full fitness.
“I knew the form was coming; I felt good in the Harry Reynolds and Ben McKenna races last weekend," Kirwan said afterwards.

“The first two days had gone well. I got into the break on Saturday and rode a good time trial. On Saturday’s stage, I saw the group that got away with 15kms to go were pretty strong with both Ciaran Power and Liam Blanchfield. I got across, but my sprint wouldn’t be the strongest, so I was last of the break.”
“I hadn’t done a time trial in three years, so didn’t know how it would go. I gave it everything though, and was happy with how it went.”
Kirwan went into the final stage in 4th place on GC, and knew he had a chance. However, with the time differences so small on GC amongst a lot of riders, others also felt they had a possibility of taking the lead from leader Blanchfield.
“The winning attack went after about a kilometre. Around 10 or 12 riders went clear, and I got up to them with a few others bridging across,” Kirwan said.
“There were initially more than 20 of us in the group, but some got shelled. We rode steadily to Baltinglass and really put the hammer down after we turned there and got the tailwind. A few of us in the break worked really hard. We were told that we had a gap of 1:50 and that reduced to 1:35 so we were getting worried. We pulled it back out though. Paddy Deegan (Eurocycles) was also in the break and just one second behind on GC, so I had to follow any attacks in the last few kilometres, and not let gaps develop.”
“When we crossed the line, I thought I had won overall, but really wanted some confirmation before I could believe it. I have to say that the team did Trojan work over the weekend. We had a talk amongst the team the other night, and felt we were capable of a stage win and getting someone into the top ten, and that’s how it worked out.”
As for the rest of the season, Kirwan says he doesn’t have any specific aims, saying, “I just want to ride the bike and enjoy racing.”
It was a good weekend for the Lucan team with its sprinter John Priest winning yesterday afternoon’s stage in Gorey in a bunch gallop.
While overall winner Kirwan did not finish on the same time as the breakaway on stage 1, he came in a few seconds ahead of the main bunch and that was to make all the difference in the end.
Shane Baker (Usher IRC) took the climbers’ classification while Laura Wasley (Isle of Man) took the women’s classification. Dylan Foley of the Irish Junior Development squad took the best young rider category.
