You don't see this too often; an elite Irish rider winning at the London Six Day. And Fintan Ryan did it in a really memorable way; putting in a fantastic finish to take the derny on the line.
Irish elite track international rider Fintan Ryan has scored an absolutely fantastic win at the London Six Day.
The former junior road race champion may have left his challenge late in the 40-lap derny, but in the end he timed it to perfection.
Early on the last lap he was sitting in 3rd place behind his derny partner. And while it looked like he had a lot - perhaps too much - ground to make up, he did it in style.
He put a really powerful late surge to draw level with British rider Fred Wright and then pass him to win.
The victory this evening on day four of the meeting follows on from Xeno Young winning the U21 Madison on the opening day.
The junior Europeans and Worlds individual pursuit silver medal winner team up with Nicolas Wernimont.
Irish rider Young and the Belgian who won two junior European titles gained a lap during the race.
That gain combined with taking points in almost every sprint saw them come away with a very dominant victory.
Before Ryan took the derny, he had already been in action with Worlds and European junior championships medal winner JB Murphy.
They took in the team elimination and in a close finish were just edged out by the German pairing of Kersten Thiele and Henning Bommel.
More to come.
