Martyn Irvine has today strengthened his bid to qualify for the London Olympics, finishing ninth overall in the omnium after two days of competition at the World Cup meeting in London.

While the new European omnium rankings arising from this weekend’s racing have yet to be published, stickybottle understands Irvine remains in 7th position; with the top eight to qualify for the Olympics.

There remains just one London 2012 qualification event, in the shape of the UCI World Track Championships in Melbourne.

Irvine in London on Friday overcame a crash in his qualifying heat to progress to the World Cup competition proper.

He then did enough in the flying lap (9th), points race (6th), and elimination race (12th) to leave himself in 7th position going into today’s second day of competition.

In the first race today – the individual pursuit - he was eight fastest of the 22-man field.

He then went on to finish sixth in the scratch race, where he was one of seven riders to lap the rest of the field.

In the final event this evening (Saturday) - the 1km TT - he was ninth.

That result left him in 9th overall. He was probably hoping to do slightly better but it was nonetheless a very good performance by the Irishman that crucially keeps him in that top eight in Europe by our calculations.
