Lucan GP Live Updates
- But Feeley still wins from Kennedy and Callaly. Dahl was 4th, Woods 5th and Kenny 6th.
- Finish line coming up and the three chasers are coming back at Feeley-Kennedy Callaly. And the chasers are on, with Jason Kenny attacking.
- Very, very cagey between the leading three now; lot of elbow flicking back and forward, lots of looking around.
- This gap is now about 20 seconds, so Kennedy, Feeley and Callaly are now well clear of Dahl, Kenney and Woods with about 3km to go.
- Still the breakaway split now into two three-rider groups, with 10 seconds between them. I think Feeley, Kennedy and Callaly have it between them in this C1 race at the Lucan GP.
- Feeley has attacked, with Callaly going after him. Those two looked like they immediately meant business so Kennedy went after them. Now we have those three - Feeley, Callaly, Kennedy - with about 5-10seconds on the other three from the breakaway, Jason Kenny (UCD CC), Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC) and Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port).
- Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC) has a go off the front and gets a gap but again its Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port) bringing the others across. They regroup and Feeley goes again, Kennedy straight on to him and Callaly lining out the others in the chase. And it's all back together again.
- We have just passed through the finish line where the breakaway got the bell - one lap of 17km to go. You would think this group will blow apart on this last lap, they've been out front for the best part of 80km here today, but you never know! The gels are being consumed now!
- We have 20km to go, so the finish line is just up ahead, where they will go out onto the last lap. The breakaway of six - now with three minutes on two chasers - is Josh Callaly (Campana), Jason Kenny (UCD CC), Daire Feeley (Burren CC), Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC), Paul Kennedy (Team Skyline) and Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port).
- Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC) now has a go off the front of the breakaway. The others are straight on to him.
- Now Feeley has attacked again and this time Paul Kennedy darted across on his own. But Josh Callaly is bringing the others up. And just as I write that, it's all together again.
- Feeley has been reeled in by the five other breakaway men - Josh Callaly (Campana), Jason Kenny (UCD CC), Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC), Paul Kennedy (Team Skyline) and Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port).
- The five-man chase group that was at 2:45 with two laps to go is now down to two riders; Eoin Clifford (Dan Morrissey) and James McKenny (Moynalty CC).
- With about 25km to go, Feeley has attacked again. But the five others are rolling through behind him and the gap is being held at about 5 seconds.
- Woods is now caught and Feeley is pushing on again. No crazy attack, just swings off to the right, squeezes on the pedals and off he goes opening a small gap. But he's caught again.
- Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port) lines out the breakaway and catches Feeley and then Woods attacks himself - so much for looking under pressure a few KMs ago!
- Feeley is attacking here off the front of the breakaway, a steady push away in a huge gear as he tucks in super-aero. He has a small gap. There is no big reaction from the other five breakaway men, with Paul Kennedy on the front. It's cagey with just over 30km to go.
- There is now a five-man chasing group at 2:20 behind this breakaway and the bunch is 3:30 back - with exactly two laps of 17km to go.
- Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC) looks strong; always pushes it on a bit when he's doing his turn in the breakaway, though maybe a bit too much. Everyone is going to need a full tin of beans in the final and it would be best to save as many beans as possible until later in this race. Just over two full laps of 17km to go.
- This is getting tactical up front now. The breakaway riders have been easing back a small bit, checking each other out a bit. Daire Feeley has just had a small attack and Paul Kennedy was straight on to him. Though all the riders dug in and the full six-man group is still together, Ruairí Woods slipped off the back a bit before closing the gap. Woods now missing a few turns. The breakaway is Josh Callaly (Campana), Daire Feeley (Burren CC), Jason Kenny (UCD CC), Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC), Paul Kennedy (Team Skyline) and Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port).
- Jason Kenny (UCD CC) in the breakaway reaching for grub and he has lost a lot of that food from his back pockets onto the road. Hopefully he has more. If not, the warning lights will be coming on soon. This has been tough 50km for these riders out front doing up and overs.
- The six-man C1 breakaway now has two minutes on the bunch. Looks like it's all over for the bunch, barring a major chase, which seems unlikely. But it is always possible some of these breakaway riders blow their lights and maybe a chase group catches them and still takes some of the minor placings. But it's hard to see the best of these breakaway men being caught. We have 50km to go.
- We are just coming to the end of the second full lap, so just a tad over three full laps, of 17km, to go for this six-man breakaway. They have just caught and passed the U14 race. One of the U14s did a VERY good job of hanging onto this C1 breakaway for about 1km, though was then shelled out the back. We hope he hasn't blow his lights, the U14 bunch was lined out after him.
- Paul Kennedy, in this breakaway today, is a class act. He came to cycling late, after playing GAA as a young lad, hurling his chosen game. He told us before he took up the bike to get fit again well into his 30s. But he soon became a top A1 rider, winning road races and TTs all over the place and claiming the Grand Fondo TT world title. To cap it all, he's riding as a UCI Continental team rider this year for Team Skyline, aged 44 years. He's some man.
- The breakaway is Josh Callaly (Campana), Daire Feeley (Burren CC), Jason Kenny (UCD CC), Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC), Paul Kennedy (Team Skyline) and Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port).
- Bren Broekaart (Challenge CC) is now missing a few turns, he's been at the back for a little while now, though he had been working. And just as we day that, he has been distanced. So the break is now down to six. We are about halfway around the second full lap in this 5.5 lap race of the 17km Dunsany Circuit in Co Meath.
- Everyone is working here, all pulling through. This is an interesting dynamic as these riders have been up the road from the opening kilometres and that means a 90km+ ride off the front today, assuming most of them stay clear. That definitely plays into the hands of the strongest riders. Everyone will be fairly cooked by the end of this after working in such a high quality group for so long.
- The breakaway is Josh Callaly (Campana), Daire Feeley (Burren CC), Jason Kenny (UCD CC), Johannes Rom Dahl (Roadman CC), Bren Broekaart (Challenge CC), Paul Kennedy (Team Skyline) and Ruairí Woods (Spellman Dublin Port).
- Some of the riders on the attack since the opening lap have been reabsorbed and now there is just a seven-man breakaway, well over one minute clear of the bunch. Between the initial breakaway and the chasing group, up to 15 riders were clear. But some lost contact, were caught, and now seven are out front in one breakaway.
- We are now across the finish line for the second time, so four laps of 17km to go. The bunch only numbers about 20-25 riders and with an estimated 15 up the road, it's hard to see the bunch coming back into this. But you never quite know. UCD and Dan Morrissey riders at the front of the bunch pushing it on. They can still see the chasing group about 20-30 seconds ahead, but the breakaway is further on again.
- Just coming through Dunsany now, bunch is at 60km per hour but it looks like both the breakaway and the chasing group are gone; out of sight, as they say.
- The chasing group is about halfway across to the breakaway. If they catch them, probably likely, that would make for a large break of about 15 riders, approximately. We'll have names very shortly.
- The gap is still only about 15-20 seconds, but again the bunch stalling. They won't get away with that, they need to start to try and get across with attacks. And just as we say that, a few chasers dart off the front of the bunch looking to bridge to the breakaway, which really looks like it means business.
- Up front the six chasers have caught the three leaders, with a nine-man group now lined out as we go over the finish line for the first time, with five full laps of the 17km to go. Josh Callaly (Campana), Jason Kenney (UCD CC), Daire Feeley (Burren CC) are among the nine clear, more names to come very shortly.
- The C1 bunch here today is relatively compact and it's been a relatively tactical start. But now we have the first moves; a three-man breakaway with six chasers looking to get across. They are only about 5-10 seconds off the front, but the bunch is stalling so anything could happen here.
- UCD Cycling Club active in the attacks from the start of this 5.5-laps of the 17km Dunsany circuit - so that's 98km in total. Ruairí Byrne has enjoyed a great start to the season for the students, winning the Seamus Kennedy Memorial the weekend before last, and Patrick O'Sullivan was 2nd at the Boyne GP last week.
- We're just underway here in the C1 race and the good news is the numbers here today are very strong - 80 in the C3 race, for example, and even 35-40 in the U16 race. So it's great to see Lucan CRC getting the support for their events.
