Liam Curley wins Christy McManus Memorial, Wicklow

Liam Curley has won the Christy McManus Memorial in Co Wicklow following a solo breakaway of over 60km.

Curley was taking his third victory of the year having won a round of the Mondello Series and also the Boyne GP.

One of the best junior riders in the country this year, Curley was selected onto the Irish team for the Junior Tour of Ireland.

And he showed yesterday that his form is holding up right into the last weeks of the 2018 campaign.

After finishing 6th in the A1-A2 Laragh Classic on Saturday, Curley went to Roundwood yesterday with victory in mind.

And he was aggressive from the outset  in pursuit of that hoped-for win.

Indeed, going off the front in a small group about 30 minutes into the race proved to be the winning of the race.

He hit the front of that group to do his turn and when he looked around for others to come through he was on his own.

And though there was more than 60km left, Curley put his head down and rode the rest of the race solo.

By the finish he had been on his own for about two hours and had put almost three minutes into the bunch.

In between the flying 18-year-old and the bunch was a chase group of three; about two minutes behind the winner.

From that chase group, Billy Crosbie (Sundrive Track Team) took 2nd place from Barry McMahon (Scott-Orwell) and Dylan Joseph of host club Bray Wheelers.

Adrian Pretorius (Blanch Wheelers) would take 5th place, with Sean Molloy of Nenagh CC in 6th on the day.

In the A4 Ronnie Coates Memorial, Sean Heaslip Owens of Dublin University CC took the honours.

Sean Lynch of Navan RC and Eric Robson from Lucan CRC filled the final two places on the podium; taking 2nd and 3rd respectively.
