One of the most consistent riders of the season, Liam
Curley has celebrated his first senior international cap with victory in the
Brendan Campbell Memorial.
Curley saw off Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) in a
two-up sprint in Donore, Co Meath, after they had forged clear of a strong
breakaway.
The eventual winner and runner-up were part of an eight-man
moved that included Curley’s Strata 3-VeloRevolution team mate James Davenport.
The Caldwell Cycles men also had a number of bodies in
the move; the in-form Angus Fyffe alongside Moore.
Indeed it was the Caldwell men who were active in
attacking and whittling down the breakaway.
With about 2½ laps remained, Moore made his move when he
countered other attacks and got a gap.
Curley took the initiative, powering clear of the group
and getting across to Moore on his own, and that was to prove the winning move.
They shared the workload until the finish neared, with
Moore letting rip with an attack up front about 5km from the finish.
However, Curley passed the test with flying colours,
refusing to be distanced. And at the finish the winner led it out, taking
victory from the front.
Moore was 2nd and best of the rest was Conor Murnane of
UCD Cycling Club who rounded out the podium.
The victory comes at a great time of Curley as he readies
himself for elite international duty with the Irish team in the Kreiz Breizh
Elites stages race next week.
