Marine Lenehan has taken one of her biggest wins on home roads, after the National Criterium Championships, when she proved best in the final round of the Cycling Ireland National Road Series in Co Down today.
The Dan Morrissey-Primór by Pissei rider, who earlier this season was winning sprints against the men at the Gorey Three Day, unleashed a powerful surge in the final today to claim the victory just ahead of the group that had dropped the rest on the day.
Lenehan, who has enjoyed success on the international Gran Fondo and gravel scenes, won by a very clear margin, with Abi Conway coming through for a fine 2nd place; the emerging U23 rider with Westport Covey Wheelers Cycling Club clearly in good form.
The podium at the Alan Towel Memorial was completed by Linda Kelly (Spin The Bean), getting a hard hit out today before she goes into camp ahead of the Paris Paralympics, where she will be competing as a tandem pilot for Team Ireland.
The leader of the Cycling Ireland National Road Series - and a woman who has won an Olympic medal in sailing - was 4th today, of the five-rider front group.
In the men's race. Seth Dunwoody (Cannibal B Victorious) has demonstrated some great form, as he comes out of a stint track racing, with a very strong victory in the senior men's race, competing against many of the top A1s in the country.
Dunwoody was part of a three-rider breakaway that pulled clear in the latter stages of the race, alongside Ruairi Byrne (UCD Cycling Club) and evergreen Ronan Killeen, the Lucan CRC man who recently won the Brendan Campbell Memorial.
Though Killeen had pressed ahead solo on the final lap, the others got across to him, with Dunwoody having too much at the end, winning from Byrne and Killeen.
More to come.
