Lavery takes Usher IRC St Patrick’s Day Race in Dunboyne

Philip Lavery (NODE4-Giordana)
Philip Lavery (NODE4-Giordana) has won the St Patrick’s Day A1/A2 race in Dunboyne, Co Meath, promoted by Usher Irish Road Club.

The 22-year-old Dubliner put to good use his visit home from the UK to take a convincing win in wet conditions, taking victory by about ten lengths from fellow breakaway rider Shane Baker (Usher Irish Road Club).

Lavery was off in the scratch group in the handicap A1/A2 event, catching the A2s after going clear of the A1s with Neil Delahaye (DID Dunboyne) and a number of others early in the race.

Lavery and Delahaye dropped the other A1s they were with just before Dorey’s Forge on the first of two passages of the drag.

The duo then caught and went through the A2 bunch and set off in pursuit of a breakaway of eight A2 riders that had taken the initiative and gone clear earlier in the race.

When Lavery and Delahaye caught the breakaway, that formed a group of ten out front. It then split under pressure applied by Lavery, with five riders pressing on together to the finish in Dunboyne.

Fresh from his win in the Roy Thame Cup in Buckinghamshire last Saturday, Lavery used his kick to easily take the win from the five-man group, with Baker second, Chris Reilly (Bohermeen CC) third and Mark Heneghan (South Dublin Zilcom) fourth.

Delahaye was last of the breakaway in fifth place after making a number of efforts to get away from Lavery and the others approaching the finish. Javan Nulty (DID Dunboyne) led in the next group to take sixth place.

In the A3 race, Kyle Cromie (Cycling Ulster Slane Cycles) put in a late charge to take a very tight sprint finish from John Caffrey (Staggs Lucan), with Liam Blanchfield (Bray Wheelers) in third.

In the A4 race a group of three arrived at the finish together, with Damien O’Brien (Lakeside) getting the verdict ahead of comeback man Joe Christian (South East Road Club). Brazilian rider Ediberto Isidro (DID Dunboyne) was third after putting in a strong effort to get across to the other two in the closing stages.
