Aqua Blue Sport has suffered a big blow at the Vuelta with one of its top riders Larry Warbasse forced out of the race.

The American, who won the US title and a stage of the Tour de Suisse, earlier this year has crashed out of the race.

While Irish ProContinental team Aqua Blue Sport have other options for stage wins in the race, Warbasse was one of its big threats.

He is not only vastly experienced but has obviously been in good form of late. And had he gotten clear in the right breakaway he was capable of pulling off a major result.

On today’s stage 7, Warbasse came down with a number of other riders with approximately 90km remaining.

Among those who also crashed were Anthony Turgis (Cofidis) and Merhawi Kudus (Dimension Data).

Both Kudus and Warbasse were forced to abandon such were their injuries.

The 207km stage from Llíria Cuenca was dominated by a 14-man breakaway. And from that move Matej Mohoric (UAE Team Emirates) would take a solo victory.

The escape was whittled down on the Alto del Castillo and the eventual winner, on the descent, would drop the few who could stay with him going up the climb.

He claimed victory by 16 seconds from a three-man group of breakaway survivors.

Pawel Poljanski (Bora-Hansgrohe) was 2nd, Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) 3rd and Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) 4th.

Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) was in a group of 45 men, with all the GC contenders, some 8:38 down on the winner.

He remains in 3rd place overall; 13 seconds off leader Chris Froome (Team Sky). Esteban Chaves is 2nd overall, the Orica-Scott rider just two seconds ahead of Roche.

Conor Dunne finished in the near 100-man autobus today some 15:39 down.
