Lara Gillespie has taken a top 20 result in the junior women’s time trial at the World Road Championships in Innsbruck, Austria.

The first-year Irish junior went into the event having already collected gold and silver medals at the European Track Championships last month.

And on an undulating and technical circuit on the road this morning she took 19th place at the Worlds.

The world title was won by Rozemarijn Ammerlaan from Holland in a time of 27:02.

She claimed the gold medal from Italian rider Camilla Alessio, who was just 6.8 seconds down for the 19.8km test.

In the bronze medal position was Team GB’s Elynor Bäckstedt; the daughter of 2004 Paris-Roubaix winner Magnus Bäckstedt.

While Bäckstedt senior is Swedish he has lived in Wales for many years and his daughter is British. She was delighted with her medal, which was a surprise for the first year junior.

Ireland’s Lara Gillespie was 1:12 off the winning time in a race where the result was tight.

Gillespie, who was one of the riders forced to endure rain for part of their ride, was eight seconds off a top 15 ride.
