Lara Gillespie powers to historic World Champs medal for Ireland

Lara Gillespie has just taken Ireland's first ever medal by a woman at a World Junior Track Championships

Having already won a European title and taken a hatful of medals at the Continental championships over the past 12 months, Lara Gillespie has now done it at the Worlds too.

The Irish teenager rode her way into the individual pursuit bronze medal race at the World Junior Track Championships in Frankfurt, Germany.

It is Ireland's first ever medal by a woman at a World Junior Track Championships.

She came up against one of the Russians and beat her to
secure the bronze in the event, just days after a crash in the scratch race.

Gillespie showed her form in qualifying this morning when she set a new personal best and Irish record during qualifying.

Gillespie was Ireland's only rider in the Worlds and she came up trumps

Lara Gillespie's time of 2:20:438 during qualification saw her average 51.268kpm for the 2,000m pursuit.

Gillespie went up against Marii Milaeva of Russian in the race for bronze and trailed by almost half a second at the halfway mark.

But the Irish rider measured her effort perfectly and ultimately claimed a very hard to win Worlds medal.

“I’m so happy, I can’t believe it," said Gillespie of her bronze medal winning performance in Germany.

"The last few laps were pretty hard, they were pretty brutal. But I worked so hard for this all year so I’m really happy.”
