Lara Gillespie takes historic race win for Ireland in Olympic omnium

Lara Gillespie has done what no other Irish cyclist has ever done at an Olympic Games in winning a race on the track at Paris this morning

Lara Gillespie of Ireland on Sunday morning moved herself into contention for a medal at the Olympic Games with a fantastic ride in the second round of the omnium.

Gillespie is now 6th in the standings - after two races of four - after she lit up the tempo race with a level of aggression the others in the field were unable to match.

She attacked just before the first sprint, getting clear on her own and taking a lap gain, as well as four sprint points during the race.

And that was enough for her to win the tempo race, comfortably, after finishing 15th in the scratch race that opened the competition today.
