Lara Gillespie just beaten for first road win of 2024 in Italy

Lara Gillespie, right, lunges for the finish line in the Irish champion's livery but just misses out on the first UCI-ranked road race win of her career

Lara Gillespie, the Irish road race champion competing with UAE Development Team, has just narrowly missed out on the first UCI-ranked win of her career at Giro Mediterraneo Rosa (2.2) in Italy today.

However, the 22-year-old can take a lot of comfort from just how far ahead she and stage winner Giada Borghesi (BTC City Ljubljana Zhiraf Ambedo) were of the rest of the field; the duo demolishing the opposition on the gradual incline to the finish line.

Gillespie, who was on track duties with the Irish national team qualifying for the Olympics in recent months, showed a great turn of speed at the end of 106.7km of racing from Frattamaggiore to Terzigno in southern Italy.
