Lara Gillespie has won the junior women’s road race title at the National Road Championships in Co Sligo.
It is yet another national title for the Scott Orwell Wheelers rider who has dominated the junior scene on the track, road and in cyclocross in Ireland.
The Youth Olympics silver medallist has now won six national titles in 2018 alone. The 17-year-old even won a senior Irish cyclocross title in January.
She also made a substantial impact at the World Cyclocross Championships in Valkenberg last February, where she placed an impressive 23rd in the U23 category.
Gillespie was the fourth junior to cross the line in that race and that was the best finish by an Irish rider ever at the Worlds.
In today’s race, six riders raced four laps of the 17.56-kilometre circuit in Collooney.
Gillespie was pushed close by Maeve Gallagher (Castlebar Cycling Club), but she emerged victorious in a sprint finish at Coolaney.
The pair arrived at the finish together where Gillespie won the sprint. Gabriella Homer of Cycle Team Onform was next over the line in third place.
