Lara Gillespie has put in an aggressive bid for a medal in the points race, the last event of four in the omnium, at the UCI World Track Championships in Denmark this evening.

The Irish woman started the points race in 6th, on 80 points and just over 20 points off the lead.

However, with five points on offering for winning each sprint, 10 for the final one, and 20 points for a lap gain, she was still very much in contention starting the final event.

And Gillespie was clearly counting herself in as she set off on several attacks, and also won a sprint, along way, despite having just been on the attack.

Two big efforts by Gillespie - a junior and U23 Europeans and Worlds multiple medal winner - early in the points race were closely marked by France's Berteau. And when Gillespie went again, with 33 laps to go, she got clear but was once again tracked by the French rider.

Though they enjoyed a short period out front, the main group was very quickly on their back wheels. However, after they were caught, Gillespie surged again and won the sprint, and five points, with 30 laps to go.

Though Gillespie was again active off the front with 20-15 laps to go, she did not manage to pull clear, though two other riders were off the front; Mexico's Yareli Acevedo and Japan's Tsuyaka Uchino.

They gained a lap, and 20 points, leapfrogging Gillespie in the overall standings, pushing the Irish woman from 6th to 8th.

With three laps to go, Gillespie hit the front early, ahead of the final sprint, and though she pushed the pace she was swamped during the final lap and did not score.

That resulted in her finishing 8th overall in the race, to add to her 5th place in yesterday's elimination race.

Earlier in the day, Gillespie finished 6th in the scratch race, 9th in the tempo race and 8th in the elimination race, leaving her 6th going into the final points race.

The omnium world title was won by New Zealand's Ally Wollaston, who won her first ever Worlds gold in the elimination race yesterday, beating Lotte Kopecky (Belgium) when it came down to just two on the track.

Great Britain's Jessica Roberts was 2nd in the omnium on 119 points - to Wollaston's 131. The British rider gained a lap in the points race, and won a sprint along the way, to boosted her to the leading position overall.

However, after gaining her lap Roberts suffered through the rest of the race as Wollaston continued to hoover up sprint points. Yvonne Anita Stenberg of Norway claimed omnium bronze on 110 points.
