Lara Gillespie has her first medal at a major championships in the bag, and it may yet be a gold.
Lara Gillespie has a guaranteed silver medal at the European Track Championships and is still in with a shot at the gold.
Gillespie, one of Ireland's most exciting riders at present, was second quickest in the junior individual pursuit qualifiers in Switzerland this morning.
She broke the Irish record on her way to the gold-silver ride off later this evening on the UCI World Cycling Centre velodrome in Aigle.
Fastest in the qualifiers this morning was the Italian Vittoria Guazzini. She is the reigning world champion and Gillespie will now go head to head with her for gold.
However, no matter what the outcome, Irish teenager Gillespie is guaranteed the silver medal; an incredible result for her.
The gap between the Irish rider and the Italian was modest in the qualifying round.
And that means Gillespie is in with a very real chance of taking the gold medal later today in the final.
Lara Gillespie clocked a time of 2:22.635 in the 2km event compared to Guazzini’s 2:21.046.
