Golden girl Lara Gillespie opens Ireland’s Euro Champs medals account

Lara Gillespie has taken another medal at a major championships; storming to scratch race silver at the European Track Championships in Gent

Lara Gillespie has opened Ireland’s account at the U23 & Junior European Track Championships by taking silver in the scratch race.

Gillespie was denied gold by Polish rider Nikola Wielowska
on the opening day of competition in Gent, Belgium.

Taking the bronze medal was Maike Van der Duin of the Netherlands,
with Eluned King of Great Britain in 4th place.

Last year at the championships, which were held in Switzerland, Gillespie claimed silver in the individual pursuit and gold in the points race.

And now she has added silver that to Europeans haul, with
the hope she just might taken even more silverware from the championship
meeting in Belgium.

Also in action today, Mia Griffin was 8th in the
U23 women’s pursuit and former Irish rider turned British rider Josie Knight
was 11th in the same event.

In the U23 elimination race Autumn Collins was 11th
while Xeno Young was 7th in the U23 individual pursuit.

Louis Bilyard is up late from the junior scratch race and JB Murphy contests the U23 elimination race.
