Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) has been romping through the first phase of the road racing season, with her series of very strong results continuing today at Gent Wevelgem, with Mia Griffin (Roland) spending much of the race in the breakaway.

Currently stuck into the first prolonged blocked of top tier road racing since signing for her team, Gillespie was in the thick of it among many of the best road riders in the world today at the end of 169km of racing in the Belgian classic.

And though European champion Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) proved unbeatable, taking her 100th career victory, Gillespie is now performing at the top end of the sport every time she pins in numbers.

The leader for her team again today - no small thing considering hers is a World Tour outfit - Gillespie sprinted in for 6th today to take one of the best results of the season to date, which have included a string of podium finishes.

Wiebes - securing her seventh win from 10 race days this year - pulled clear of her rivals the moment she reached for the afterburners in the bunch sprint and never looked like being challenged.

Though former world champion Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek) got closest to the Dutch rider, taking 2nd place, the fight was always for the minor placings once Wiebes kicked. With Balsamo taking the runner-up spot, Charlotte Kool (Team Picnic PostNL) was 3rd, with Gillespie in 6th.

Mia Griffin (Roland) also tried to get into the mix in the final, finishing in the bunch on the same time as the winner and placing 39th. The only other Irish rider in the race today was first-year U23 rider Lucy Bénézet Minns (Lotto Ladies), who was a non-finisher.
