Gillespie and Gallagher win stages as George still leads in Omagh

Lara Gillespie, Clodagh Gallagher win Omagh stages

After a group of four gained four minutes on the opening stage of the Omagh Three Day, two of the rising stars of Irish cycling were to the fore on the second day of racing on Saturday.

Lara Gillespie of Scott-Orwell won the morning TT, while Clodagh Gallagher (Cycling Ulster) was best in the afternoon road stage.

However, Jennifer George of TC Racing still leads the overall classification.

George bridged across to what remained of the limit group in the handicapped race on Friday’s stage 1.

And when she made up the gap solo she teamed up with three others in that front group: Isobel Oakes (Smugglers CC), Agnieszka Wozniak (Cork County CC) and Jane Wilkinson (Cycling Ulster).

They combined well to stay out front by almost four minutes, with George winning the sprint for the stage win.

Saturday’s two stages were an opportunity for those riders who missed out on the opening leg to make amends.

And in the 4km TT in the morning first-year junior Gillespie raced to victory. She recorded a time of 5:48, some two seconds ahead of race leader George.

Jennifer Bates (Gerard-DHL) was 3rd a further four seconds back, with Fiona Guihen (Cycling Leinster) in 4th some seven seconds off the winner.

In the afternoon 74km stage the racing was marked by plenty of aggression. But this time around all of the limit riders were caught.

And though attacks went off the front they were closed down, paving the way for a sprint from a 20-rider group.

Gallagher got the better of Gillespie in the battle of the juniors; taking victory in the rain. Laura Campbell of Cycling Ulster also put in a very strong finish to round out the podium.

But race leader George was also in the mix; netting 4th on the day and doing more than enough to keep her on top in the general standings.

Sunday’s final stage is a tough one; Gortin Glens and the Lenamore Road climb featuring n the last 10km.

George leads by 24 seconds from Wozniak. Oakes and Wilkinson are 3rd and 4th, both at 31 seconds.

And TT winner Gillespie is best of those who were not in that leading quartet on the opening stage. She’s in 5th, but 3:50 down and with it all to do.
