Lara Gillespie (UAE Team ADQ) was among the fallers in a massive crash on the opening stage of UAE Tour today, though the Irish rider was able to get back on her bike and continue.
The crash occurred with 53km to go and as the breakaway was still 2:25 up the road. A large group of riders came down on a straight road.
One of the riders sitting about 20th appeared to brake, causing a ripple back through the field. A large number came down, as the bunch was tightly packed and traveling at speed at the time.
Gillespie seemed to be in the middle of the pile-up and she was one of the riders who took a time to right herself and get going again.
However, she was quickly chasing back on, as the peloton eased off the pace, and was back in the bunch after a few kilometres and looking untroubled near the front.
Today's opening stage - which was ongoing at the time of writing - takes the riders some 149km from Dubai Police Officer's Club to Dubai Harbour.
