Mikel Landa has joined his Soudal-QuickStep team leader, Remco Evenepoel, in the sick bay with broken bones after the crashes continued at Itzulia Basque Country today.
Landa and his young team mate Gil Gelders crashed on stage 5, as the Urkiola climb was about to start with 95km remaining. The Spanish rider has now been confirmed as having broken his collarbone and will be out of action for some time.
He will not undergo surgery to pin the broken bone and will instead let it heal naturally, as his 5th and 6th ribs, both of which were also broken in the crash, will also heal.
On yesterday's stage 4 crash, Evenepoel was among a number of riders who crashed out in a very nasty crash with about 30km to go and was diagnosed with a fracture to his right collarbone and his right scapula.
Evenepoel travelled to Belgium today, Friday, where he will undergo an operation on his collarbone, and further examination, at hospital in Herentals.
While race leader Primož Roglič (Bora-hansgrohe) also came down in the stage 4 crash, and was forced to abandon, he has not suffered any fractures and should not be out of action for long, even though he also crashed hard on stage 3.
Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard also broke a collarbone, and several ribs, in the stage 4 crash, though it has since emerged his injuries are even more serious. He also sustained a collapsed lung and a pulmonary contusion.
Also in the stage 4 crash, other injuries include:
- Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) with concussion and sternum fracture
- Natnael Tesfatsion (Lidl-Trek) multiple soft tissue injuries to the right side
- Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates) a cervical and two thoracic spine vertebral body fractures
- Stef Cras (TotalEnergies) right pneumothorax, several associated rib fractures and two dorsal vertebral fractures, in addition to several hematomas, wounds and dermabrasions
