It's the first weekend of the racing scene this weekend and that means one thing; the prestigious Lacey Cup will get the Munster season up and running. Organised by Manor West Tralee BC, the event is in its 71st year, which is an incredible achievement.
The race will takes place this Sunday, March 1st, from event headquarters at John Mitchels GAA club in Tralee. Sign in will operate from 9am to 10:30am and rásing rolls out from 11:10am.
The main C1-C2 race is run on a handicap basis consisting of two groups. First off is the group of C2 riders, followed by the C1s. The groups usually merge and then a huge battle gets underway to decide who the next rider will be to get their name on this trophy.
The separate C3 race will start approximately five mins after the C1 riders get underway in pursuit of the C2s in the main event. The C3 event will follow the same race route.
The first prime of the race is Gleann na nGealt and will likely be hotly contested between the C2 riders. Following Gleann na nGealt, the C1 and C2 groups will work hard to catch the race leaders as they head towards Inch.
After Castlemaine the riders will climb Sliabh Mish mountain and contest the second prime for The Teddy Griffin Memorial Cup. Sliabh Mish mountain is usually where the race is broken up into a small group with the expected winner coming from this groups.
Entry fee is €30, and registration is online only.
