Kinning underlines form rider status in Lurgan; with full results

Having pushed very hard for victory before being forced to settle for the runner-up slot in Dublin on the opening day of the cyclocross season, Glenn Kinning made no mistake in Lurgan Park, Co Armagh, on Sunday.

Riding in his own Kinning Cycles colours, he made it look very easy over seven laps of the circuit that was perfect for racing despite the rain in the days before the event.

And while national champion Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC) was not on the start line on Sunday, that fact does not detract from Kinning’s win; the ever-strong road and off road man looking in the kind of form that will trouble all comers in the months ahead.

The weekend before last in Grange Castle, west Dublin, he pushed ‘cross legend Robin Seymour closer than the Team WORC man has been pressed by anybody in the past couple of years other than Aiken and Ray O’Shaughnessy (Cuchulainn); the only two who have beaten Seymour in recent seasons.

And though Seymour would pull away from Kinning to win that opening round of the Fixx Coffeehouse Supercross Cup, Kinning clearly announced that he was in mint condition for this winter’s hostilities.

On Sunday last he pulled away from the rest of the field all the way at the opening round of the Ulster Cyclocross Series. And once into his stride the result looked a formality.

In the end Kinning was well clear on his own, with Matthew Adair (Xmtb McConvey Cycles) finishing in 2nd place.

Adair had gotten the best start on the day and pushed into the lead on the opening two laps before being overtaken and distanced by Kinning's relentless pace.

The winner had 49 seconds to spare at the end over Adair, with Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles) in 3rd, only 10 further seconds adrift.

Indeed, while there was clear daylight between victor and runner-up, the race for the minor placings was much closer.

With Adair besting Moore by 10 seconds, just 14 further seconds would elapse before Sean O'Tuathail (Bray Wheelers) came home in 4th place.

And he was just five seconds ahead of James Curry in 5th; the Banbridge CC man also the first junior home on the day. In 6th place was O'Shaughnessy, another 10 seconds behind.

Peter McConville (Newry Wheelers) was first unplaced veteran and Johnny McCabe (Cuchulainn CC) was first unplaced supervet; the over 50 years category.

The top juniors on the day were Curry, Cameron McIntyre (Banbridge CC) and Calvin Moore (Caldwell Cycles).

The B race was won by Richard Archer from East Tyrone CC, from Michael McMullan (North Down CC) and Olan Byrne (Phoenix CC).

The races were promoted by Apollo CT, with the series sponsored this year by Chainreactioncycles.com’s Belfast store.
