Kinning makes light of mishaps for strong win in Dungannon

Glenn Kinning took his first win of this season's Ulster cyclo-cross series in Dungannon yesterday, the Kinning Cycles man winning a cracking race from Graham Boyd (Xmtb McConvey Cycles) and Roger Aiken (Team ASEA).

Kinning was third in the opening round in Lurgan at the start of the month behind reigning national champion David Montgomery (Chain Reaction Cycles) and Aiken but looks to be finding his form as the season progresses.

Montgomery was racing abroad yesterday so wasn’t in Dungannon but Kinning still had to contend against a strong field.

He wasn’t helped by the tricky course as well as his chain becoming jammed between frame and chainset with a few laps to go but he kept cool when Aiken and Boyd passed him out.

“Things were going okay for me, I was feeling good but I dropped the chain and that cost me around 20 seconds,” said the winner.

“I got it jammed and had to dismount so Roger and Graham passed me.

“I had a bit of work to do to catch them in the last two laps but once I got up to Graham I knew he hadn’t much left, so when I went passed him I knew I was in the clear.

“I caught Roger going up a steep bank and just held him off so that was good, I think the form is coming.”

Boyd managed to take second yesterday with Aiken taking the final spot on the podium despite a spirited challenge from Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles).

Kinning plans to race twice in Belgium next month, at Hafflet and Koksijde next month and is looking to build form for those.

Next weekend, however, he’ll be in Larne for the fourth round of the Ulster series and though it’s not a goal to win the series outright, he said he’ll be aiming to win again there next Sunday.

In the women’s race yesterday, Claire Oakley again proved victorious, the Xmtb McConvey Cycles seeing off Gill Smith (Phoenix CC) after another exciting tussle.

Oakley has been in good form this winter so far, taking second to Beth McCluskey (Unattached Leinster) in the opening round three weeks ago, while winning round two last weekend in round two.

In the latter, she also beat Smith, with the margin of victory yesterday almost identical.

This time around she had 34 seconds to spare and they were both well clear of third-place finisher Kathryn Aiken of Banbridge CC.

Thirteen riders signed on for this particular race in what was another bumper entry for all races.

The ‘B’ race was won by Michael Cowan of Chain Reaction Cycles and he had over a minute to spare on Mark Short (Phoenix CC) with William Boyd (Xmtb McConvey Cycles) rounding out the podium.
