The trend of Ireland's youthful up-and-coming riders being to the fore during the current cyclocross season continued at 'Round 5' of the Leinster Cyclocross Series in Co Westmeath yesterday when junior Tadhg Killeen won the elite men's race and U23 Doireann Killeen was victorious in the women's event.
The men's race saw young Killeen claim an impressive win by well over one minute after he turned he applied the pressure throughout. In the six-lap event, the teenager riding with Kilcullen CC Murphy Geospatial, rode a great race from start to finish to run out a comfortable winner.
Killeen had already put 16 and 17 seconds into eventual runner-up Jason Henry (Inspired Cycling) and 3rd place finisher Colm McGarvey (Epic MTB-Expert Cycles) by the end of the opening lap. And from that point the youngster simply continued to build his advantage.
By the finish, after just over 48 minutes of racing, Killeen had 1:29 to spare over Henry, with McGarvey in 3rd a further 18 seconds back, and on the same time as Frank McDermott (Oldcastle CC) in 4th. John Doris (Epic MTB-Expect Cycles) placed 5th at 2:22 while Paul Caldwell (Team WORC) rounded out the top six, finishing at 2:25
In the women's race, Doireann Killeen (Kilcullen CC Murphy Geospatial) won what was a closer battle with runner-up Aoife Reilly (Dunboyne CC) while Leah McCarthy (Team Giant Dublin) rounded out the podium.
It was Reilly who got the best start and at the end of the second lap, of five, she was leading by around 13 seconds from Killeen. However, Killeen struck on the third lap, rounding it in 9:08, some 15 seconds faster than Reilly, with the two riders exchanging the lead.
However, even at that point, there was very little in it and that remained the case on the penultimate lap; both riders going out onto that last lap almost side-by-side - Killeen just ahead - and with the victory still very much in the balance.
But on that last lap it was Killeen who had a little more in the tank; putting nine seconds into her rival to win it by 13 seconds. McCarthy was 3rd at 1:15 while Heather Foley (Yeats Country CC) placed 4th at 1:58. Niamh Stephens (Team Giant Dublin) was 5th at 2:51 and Irish Masters road race champion Helen White (Stamullen RC) placed 6th at 4:19.
