Kevin McCambridge has said he was disappointed with his ride in the junior TT at the World Road Championships today as his 20th place fell below his pre-race expectations.

In a field stacked with talent, the Irish teenager was well inside the top 10 when he passed through the time checks along the course.

However, as the riders off in the latter stages of the contest came through he was bumped down the standings.

His 20th place, a very solid results at this level, was 2:04 off the time of the new world champion Antonio Tiberi.

The Italian clocked a time of 38:28 over the two-lap circuit in Harrogate; covering the 27.6km test in 43.05km per hour despite a mechanical at the start.

McCambridge told stickybottle that in hindsight he perhaps went a bit too hard early in his effort and overestimate how much recovery he would get on the descents.

“It was a tough circuit,” he said of what was an undualting lap, with the racing unfolding on roads that were wet in patches.

“I thought I could ride hard on the drags and recover on the
descents but when at race pace you didn’t have as much time to recover.

“I went too hard at
the start. I just thought I’d be recovering well on the downhill. But when you’re
going that fast the downhill didn’t feel long.

“I’m quite disappointed as I really wanted a big result. But
I learned a lot. I thought the course was really good.

“It was a really technical course and I feel I went well around corners."

McCambridge will ride the junior men's road race on Thursday with Archie Ryan.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Ben Healy and Michael O'Loughlin are in action for Ireland in the U23 TT and Kelly Murphy and Anna Turvey line up in the elite women's test.
